Falls prevention week 2020

9/21/2020

According to the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) more than one out of four people 65 and older fall every year, and over 3 million are treated in emergency departments for fall injuries.

We can do our part to help prevent these falls. As Falls Prevention Week 2020 kicks off this week, as providers, caregivers, family and friends of older adults, we play an important role in preventing these devastating falls.

The CDC’s STEADI Initiative includes three elements to reduce fall risk: Screen, Assess, and Intervene.

  1. Screen for fall risk yearly or any time patient presents with an acute fall.
  2. Assess patient’s modifiable risk factors and fall history.
  3. Intervene to reduce identified risk factors using effective strategies.

Learn more about the STEADI Initiative to reduce the risk of falls.

Baby Boomers and Home HEALTH care

10/26/2019

Baby boomers enjoying their family
Many Baby Boomers prefer to be with their families at home rather than in assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
For the most part, as we age, we usually would like to continue residing in our familiar environment where we can live out the rest of our days. So the choice is pretty simple. So as Baby Bloomers gets closer and closer to this lifestyle, home care agencies should be preparing for the influx.

According to a survey that was conducted by NBC News, 89% of those aged 50 and older would like to stay in their own homes as they age. 95% of those 65 and older said they too wish to remain in their home or near relatives.

With that said, most of our elderly population would prefer to continue in their familiar environment as they complete their cycle of aging. At this point, we are looking at retirement for most of our baby boomers now considered as senior citizens, and we will, at some point in time, need the assistance of the home care industry. The industry will be growing, and we have to be prepared to be able to offer the care that will be necessary for our seniors. Agencies are popping up every day, joining the ranks of currently operating agencies. I don't know if coming into the industry is going to be enough. Ask the owner of a home care agency; I asked myself the following six questions:

  1. Will we have enough agencies to take care of our seniors? Will they have to go to the facilities?
  2. Are the insurance company prepared to deliver this type of attention to the seniors?
  3. What kind of changes could we be possibly facing?
  4. What type of care will be delivered?
  5. Will the care be at its maximal potential, or will some of the agencies just there for monetary gains?
  6. Will there be passion in delivering the care that's needed?

In the future, more home care agencies will be required to make senior care not only possible but also more effective.
